Independent Study Co-op Alternative

Welcome to your independent study, where you will have an opportunity to meet and learn from an industry expert and work independently to create a website specific to your industry sector.

The Project

Create a website related to your field of interest.  You will be submitting your website to an industry expert for feedback at the end of the semester.

Here are some example website creation ideas for each sector:

  • Arts and Culture – Promotion of a show, production, artist or local festival / event
  • Construction – Promotion of construction services
  • Justice, Community Safety & Emergency Services – Refugee services or cyber crime prevention tips / stories
  • Business – B2B or B2C e-commerce store and service listing
  • Sports – Promotion of a sports event, physio and rehabilitation services, stats and bio of a specific athlete
  • Non-profit – Promotion of a fundraising event for a registered charity, global or local cause
  • Hospitality & Tourism – Promotion of a food or tourism service
  • Environment – Promotion of awareness of an environmental issue and how to take steps to prevent impact

Planning Steps

Complete each of the following tasks to plan out your website:

  1. Research what type of website you would create for your field of interest/SHSM sector (examples listed above)
  2. What is the goal / purpose of your website?
  3. Who is the target audience for your website / services?
  4. What is the colour theme of the site?  Why?
  5. What is the action item for your visitors? (booking a service, sharing the page on social media, commenting on an article, etc.)
  6. What metric will you use to track if your website is successful?  (website views, clicks, shares, etc.)
  7. How will you ensure a good visitor experience on the website?
  8. What barriers would your visitors face and how would you help overcome them? Ex: accessibility, mobile users, etc.
  9. Find five (5) websites that serve a similar purpose and feel to what you want to achieve:
    • what features do you like about these websites?
    • what features do you dislike?
    • what is missing that your website could offer?
    • why would people your website instead of these other websites?
  10. Create a logo for your website.

Resources are provided below to assist with each of the tasks above.

Document all of your research, brainstorming and answers to the questions above in a document that will need to be submitted at the end of this assignment.

When you are satisfied with the end result:

  1. Share the publicly-accessible link with at least three (3) friends and ask for feedback.
  2. Implement any changes to address the feedback and document these changes in your assignment.
  3. Submit the form below with your complete assignment.  These submissions will be shared directly with your teacher and reviewed by an industry expert for feedback at the end of the term.
