Beyond the Classroom-Getting Students Connected to Industry

Flashpoint Training is taking experiential learning one step further by connecting students with employers, career opportunities and real-world challenges through an exciting new approach to SHSM programming.

For many high school students, deciding what comes after graduation can feel overwhelming. They may be interested in health care, sports or helping others, but understanding what careers exist, what qualifications are needed and how to get started isn’t always easy.

At Flashpoint Training, we believe career exploration should be more than listening to presentations or collecting brochures at a career fair. Students need opportunities to meet industry professionals, ask meaningful questions and discover how their interests can translate into future employment.

That’s why we’re experimenting with a new model that combines career exploration, employer engagement, LEGO® building challenges and Sector-Partnered Experiences (SPE) into one interactive learning experience.

Starting with Health, Wellness and Sports

Our first integrated experience will focus on Health & Wellness and Sports, introducing students to professionals representing a diverse range of career pathways.

Participating partners include Chartwell Retirement Residences, highlighting careers in senior living, health care, recreation and hospitality. Students will also connect with an operating room nurse, gaining insight into surgical nursing, specialized health care and the realities of working in a hospital and more.

What makes this experience different is how students interact with industry partners.

Working in teams, students will tackle a real-world SPE challenge, researching solutions, developing ideas and using LEGO materials to build models that demonstrate their thinking.

Throughout the process, students will engage directly with participating professionals, asking questions about industry challenges, potential solutions and career opportunities.

They’ll also be encouraged to explore practical employment questions: What qualifications do employers look for? Are there summer jobs or entry-level opportunities? What volunteer experience would help? What steps can students take now to prepare?

By integrating career conversations into hands-on problem-solving, students gain a deeper understanding of both the industry and the people working within it.

Building Pathways from Education to Employment

This initiative is part of Flashpoint Training’s broader commitment to connecting young people with employers and meaningful career opportunities.

Our goal is to move beyond career awareness and help students build connections that may lead to summer employment, internships, volunteering and future careers.

For employers, it’s an opportunity to showcase their industries, introduce emerging career pathways and connect with the next generation of talent.

For students, it’s a chance to discover what’s possible—and understand how to get there.
